3 Ways to Identify Cheaters in the Marketplace
People looking for a quick buck at your expense will always exist in the paper converting marketplace. Companies may fudge numbers when it comes to Kraft footage or provide you shorter sheets than what you ordered. It’s important to be informed on how you can identify cheaters so you can have the upper hand during the negotiation and inspection processes.
For example, the most common form of cheating in the Kraft roll industry is by the footage. It’s easy for these cheaters to take advantage of the footage because it’s impractical to check it. We’ll teach you tricks to use on your current roll stock now to see if you’re being cheated!
Handymath
You can easily check the rolled length of the material you’ve ordered with Handymath’s calculators. Click on the image below to access their website.
If you want to check for the rolled length of the Kraft rolls that you’ve ordered, the process is similar. Input the outside diameter in inches, thickness of the material in inches, and diameter of the center hole (core). Make sure the length of the material is chosen as feet, unless you want a different measurement. Click Calculate on the bottom left, and you’ll get the calculated length of the material.
By working with us at Crown Paper Converting, you and your customers will be safe because we’re California Weight and Measure certified and proven to never cheat our customers.
Micrometer
A micrometer is commonly used due to its high accuracy and digital functionality. You’ll want to open the device by turning the knob at the top. Allow for sufficient spacing to let the paper rest on it. Rest the device on your fist and allow your pinky or ring finger to wrap around the curved portion as shown in the picture below. Turn the knob the other direction to clamp the measuring device down on a part of the paper (preferably the corner or edge).
The micrometer will then click and provide the accurate thickness of the paper you’ve just measured. You should do this multiple times in a variety of locations on the paper because the material is never perfectly flat. We ensure that our caliper is precise by measuring a sample of our paper with a micrometer before rewinding, sheeting, or cutting them.
We highly suggest getting the Anytime Tools’ 1″ digital micrometer because of how simple and cost-efficient it is. With this $27 investment, you’ll be able to protect yourselves and your customers from cheaters.
Think about it this way. If your caliper isn’t accurate or you simply don’t have one, you’ll be at a disadvantage if your customers do. If you don’t catch the cheaters out before you send paper rolls to your customers, then you’ll become the cheater in the eyes of your customers. Trust us when we say that a simple micrometer will be one of the most important yet simple investments you’ll make.
Check the Sheet Count
You can’t possibly sit there and count every single sheet of paper you’ve ordered. Yet did you know that you can quickly and accurately judge if you got the right number of sheets? Take the caliper and multiply the thickness of the paper by the number of sheets you ordered.
-
Multiply the caliper
.030 pt
-
by the # of sheets
1,500
-
to get the height of the sheet stack
45" or 3.75'
This number will actually give you a surprisingly accurate estimate of the height. You can then compare that number to your height, and see if the shipment seems correct.
Now that you’re equipped with 3 easy tools to accurately check and measure your orders, you’ll have an easier time identifying cheaters in the marketplace and promote trustworthy and successful business practices.
